Thinking Big

Rushing through the Salt Lake International Airport, I swiftly passed by a clothing store. The beautiful bright colors caught my eyes and I couldn't resist but to turn around and browse through the racks of rainbows. I looked down at my top and decided I needed something to brighten my wardrobe on this particular Monday as I headed to California. My eyes rested on a coral top. The price tag said $70. WHAT?! was my first reaction. I ushered my way out of the store, justifying to myself why it was too expensive. Slowly walking back to the gate, I realized my thoughts centered around a poor woman's mentality.
PRESS PAUSE.
Let me explain. Frivolousness is foolishness but telling yourself you can't afford it when you know you can is what I call a poor woman's mentality. Hanging on to pennies, scared there won't be enough to go around if you buy a $70 shirt. There is always enough for what you want in life! It's all relative depending on your budget of course. But even your budget is dictated by your centering thoughts about money, whether there's enough or not. Maybe you can relate this to a situation you've had. Afraid to do something for yoU, fearing there isn't enough. That's called scarcity and we are naturally designed (biologically, think hunters and gatherers) to react this way. But if you look around, we live in a world of abundance.
I walked back into the store, took the coral top off the rack and headed to the counter to pay. The cashier enthusiastically exclaimed, "Your total is $58.02! You saved a few bucks." Ha! I laughed. I didn't really save anything because the act of purchasing the item itself meant I spent money BUT what's the lesson? It was $12 less than I expected. You see what shifting my mind from a "poor woman's mentality" to abundance and a "wealthy woman's mentality" did? Not only was the top originally affordable but now it was on sale? I would have never known that had I not turned around and shifted my mentality. Often times we miss out (and I get it, this is just a shirt lol) on the things we desire because of our mental mindset. You can apply this to anything your heart desires, whether it's material or a spiritual purchase. The coral top represents so much more than a piece of cloth draped over the top half of my body. I didn't get a chance to try it on in the store, threw it on in the airport bathroom and was a little displeased by the funny flaps on the arms. BUT but but. The "act" of buying the shirt is so much more valuable than the $58. The coral top was more about investing in MYSELF than anything else, and investing in yourself is the BEST INVESTMENT you will ever make in your life.
My husband recently bought us tickets for a seminar to watch some of the greatest motivational speakers and financial gurus in the world, including Tony Robbins (EEEK!!!! oozing with excitement), Robert Kiyosaki (if you haven't read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" do yourself a favor. He will teach you all about leveraged income. Talk about a lightbulb moment.), Eric Worre and Susan Sly, a philanthropist I really admire and want to mirror my life after. P.S. Six months ago when I read Susan's book, "The Have it All Woman", I told myself I would meet her someday. Setting intentions is another topic for another blog.
For now, I want to outline the importance of THINKING BIG. Often times we think SMALL and that is detrimental to our growth as humans. Thinking small robs us of experiencing life in big ways. I compare thinking small to fear. Small thinking is fear based. Fearful you won't have enough money for this and that. Guess what happens when you believe there isn't enough? There isn't enough. Guess what happens when you think there's no way for you to BE the person you day dream about? You get the point.
You become your small thoughts just like you can become your "big" thoughts. So DREAM BIG, THINK BIG and then? ACT BIG. As in put action into your big dreams and big thoughts. Because without action it's just a dream or a thought and nothing more. What would have happened if I had shifted my mentality when I walked out of that store and told myself, "Nineveh, you know you could have afforded that." but didn't go back? It would have just been a thought, meaningless in the end because I didn't act on it. So please remember that THINKING BIG is important but putting ACTION behind those big thoughts is the secret.
That's why I bought the coral top!!! Because I knew I was thinking small and it angered me. There will be times during your journey in thinking big that you will revert to thinking small again. Don't. If others want to think small, let them. If others want to laugh at your big dreams and goals, let them. They are thinking small. You however, think BIG.
'Aint nobody got time for the naysayers, including the ones in your own head.
